Re-evaluating the concept of the comfort zone amid societal pressure

I recently had the opportunity to attend an inspiring webinar, led by Catherine Rambert and organized by ICF Synergy.

The bold central theme was: “Achieving excellence without leaving your comfort zone.”

This idea resonated deeply with me. What if this constant pressure to step out of our comfort zone is just an illusion?


This discussion challenges a societal injunction often perceived as a must to avoid stagnation. But as Catherine reminded us, working within our zone of trust can be not only sufficient but also profoundly beneficial for reaching our goals.


📌 Understanding the COMFORT ZONE

The comfort zone is often associated with avoidance, a place where we retreat to shield ourselves from the unknown.

But what happens when this zone becomes a trap? ⚠️Traditionally, stepping out of the comfort zone means taking risks, embracing the unknown, and confronting fears.

However, for our brain, staying in this zone offers advantages: it promotes focus and creativity—key elements for success. Feeling secure allows us to tap into our internal resources and excel.


❓ Do we really need to leave our COMFORT ZONE?

Is this omnipresent injunction in personal development always the way to go? It can often lead to additional stress and a sense of insecurity. It's crucial to distinguish between productive discomfort and paralysis caused by limiting fears.


Key points from the conference:


1- Working in a secure environment isn’t always a barrier to success.

➤ A space where we feel safe can generate significant results. Imagine a team where every member feels free to express their ideas without fear of judgment.


2- Leveraging past skills can sometimes be more effective than forcing painful changes.

➤ The speaker shared examples of people improving their performance while staying within their comfort zone.

My approach as an Executive Coach

As a coach, I have often encountered this injunction to "step out of your comfort zone."But do we really need to suffer to evolve?

My approach is different: I favor a method where I ask my clients about their limits, so they feel safe while moving forward.

This questioning allows them to explore their potential without the constraint of discomfort.


The 3P model: Permission, Power, Protection

To support this process, I use Éric Berne’s 3P model, an essential tool for managing the comfort zone:

  • Permission: Granting yourself the freedom to act and think without restriction.

    🧠 When was the last time you gave your mind permission to act without fear?

  • Power: Taking control of your life through conscious choices.

    💪 How can you exercise your power?

  • Protection: Creating safety systems to move forward confidently.

    🛡️ What protections have you put in place to feel secure?


Navigating between safety and limiting fears

It's essential to distinguish the comfort zone from limiting fears. You don’t have to sacrifice all forms of security to evolve.We all need a protective framework to dare to make autonomous choices and take calculated risks. ⚖️


Examples of protection in different contexts 👥

  1. Managers:

    • Foster a culture of kindness where every team member feels safe to express their ideas.

    • Avoid power plays by establishing clear and fair rules.

    • Implement a system of constructive feedback.

  2. Entrepreneurs:

    • Build a support network with other entrepreneurs to exchange ideas.

    • Plan a secure financial strategy with an emergency fund to handle the unexpected.


🤝 My role as the coach: creating a climate of trust

In effective coaching, establishing an atmosphere of trust and safety is essential. My role is to help you find that safe zone, where exploration becomes an adventure, not a painful ordeal.

Support towards fulfillment

Imposing the idea of leaving the comfort zone at all costs can be counterproductive. It may provoke resistance or even insecurity. My goal: to help you implement secure and effective strategies so you can explore new possibilities at your own pace.

  1. Identify your sources of security: What grounds you?

  2. Develop strategies for new challenges: How can you approach new situations calmly?

  3. Encourage exploration without constraint: How can you explore your aspirations without unnecessary pressure?

True personal development shouldn’t come from suffering. It’s about finding a balance between safety and exploration. ⚖️
